PARISH OUTREACH Chairperson: Jon DeVoll Parish Outreach is the Social Concerns arm of St. Edmond's Parish. It is committed to helping people in the parish and community. It also works to change laws and institutions, where needed, to assure greater social justice, especially for "the least of our brothers." The mission statement defines the committee: - "Inspired by the values of the Gospel and anchored in prayer and the social teachings of the Catholic Church, the Parish Outreach Committee of St. Edmond's serves the Parish community as its primary resource for works of charity and justice."
Everyone, including the general public, is welcome to Parish Outreach general meetings held at St. Edmond's Church hall at dates and times announced in the church bulletin. Core, or executive, committee meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at St. Jude's. Parish Outreach carries out its mission through six ministries: This group works closely with the diocesan Catholic Charities office in Wilmington. Social justice issues are identified and explained. Volunteers help educate other parishioners and enlist their aid in expressing the Catholic position on specific legislation or action. The U.S. Catholic Bishops have identified many issues which pose a threat to the dignity of the human person. Among them are: food, environment, discrimination, arms control, immigration, education, abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, health, and the economy. BEREAVEMENT Chairpersons: Monica Robinson & Dee Melchiorre
On behalf of the parish, bereavement volunteers help provide comfort to parishioners who have lost a loved one through death. Members send sympathy cards and may telephone or visit the bereaved. Other volunteers serve as greeters at funeral home viewings and assist at funeral masses. COMFORTING - Chairperson: Pat DeVoll Volunteers for this ministry visit people who are lonely or homebound. They also call such individuals to reassure them that someone cares and will be there for them if they need help. They visit people in nursing homes and some volunteers take their pets to nursing homes to help cheer up the residents. Volunteers also provide respite for caregivers who need a break from the stress of constantly providing care. GOOD SAMARITAN - Chairpersons: Mary Folan
This ministry provides transportation for people who need a ride to church, to stores, doctors or other similar destinations. Volunteers can also help with light house work or yard work for people who cannot handle those chores and have no other source of help. Volunteers can help with snow shoveling for those who can't find or afford such services. HEALTH - Chairperson: Pat DeVoll The Health Ministry arranges for parish health projects such as flu shots, blood pressure tests and other health screenings. They conduct health information meetings, and provide health tips in the parish bulletin. The group generally determines the health needs of the parish and community and tries to meet those needs either directly or through referrals to other health services.
